Options for varicose vein removal

Endovenous thermal ablation is a laser treatment that uses high-frequency radio waves to create intense local heat in the targeted vein. The heat closes off the varicose vein and causes the blood to redirect to healthier veins. The delivery of anesthetic to the treatment area is usually the only sensation patients experience during the procedure. This minimally invasive treatment allows patients to return to most work activities the following day.
Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy eliminates smaller varicose and spider veins by way of a solution injected directly into the vein. Most often, sclerotherapy treated veins fade within a few weeks, though occasionally more than one treatment may be required. No bed rest is required following the sclerotherapy procedure.
Ultrasound-Guided Sclerotherapy
This highly specialized procedure works much like the sclerotherapy mentioned above except that it is used to treat larger varicose veins that are hidden beneath the skin’s surface. Prior to the procedure, a detailed ultrasound examination helps create a sort of map displaying all the abnormal veins. Using the ultrasound as a guide, the doctor then finds the varicose veins and injects the solution into them. The recovery time is very brief.
Phlebectomy
The phlebectomy procedure uses a series of incisions in the skin next to the enlarged varicose vein. The doctor then inserts a phlebectomy hook under the surface of the skin to remove the varicose vein through the tiny incision. This procedure is done with local anesthesia and usually takes between 30 and 60 minutes. No stitches are required, and most patients can resume daily activities within 24 hours.
