Half of all Americans over the age of 50 have varicose veins, which occur when the veins become enlarged, dilated, and overfilled with blood. Varicose veins aren’t just unsightly. If left untreated, they can also cause uncomfortable symptoms, including:
- Swelling of legs and feet
- Fatigue or restlessness in leg muscles
- Skin discoloration
- Throbbing and cramping at night
- Itching and burning in the surrounding skin
- Venous insufficiency
- Irregular circulation
- Deep-vein thrombosis (blood clot)
The good news is there’s a solution. Whether you’re experiencing uncomfortable symptoms from your varicose veins, or you just don’t like the way they look, at San Diego Varicose Vein Treatment Center, we can help you get rid of them!
Options for varicose vein removal
We offer numerous treatment options for removing your varicose veins, and they’re all in-office, minimally invasive procedures. Although we use the term “removal,” to describe the elimination of varicose veins, many of our methods actually work to close them by way of heat or an injectable solution that causes scarring within the vein. Once a vein is scarred and closed, the blood flow will redirect to healthier veins. Over time, the body reabsorbs the useless vein.
At San Diego Varicose Vein Treatment Center, Dr. Behzad Taghizadeh will diagnose your condition and determine which of the following procedures to use in the elimination of your varicose veins.
Endovenous Thermal Ablation
Endovenous thermal ablation is a laser treatment that uses high-frequency radio waves to create intense local heat in the targeted vein. The heat closes off the varicose vein and causes the blood to redirect to healthier veins. The delivery of anesthetic to the treatment area is usually the only sensation patients experience during the procedure. This minimally invasive treatment allows patients to return to most work activities the following day.
Sclerotherapy eliminates smaller varicose and spider veins by way of a solution injected directly into the vein. Most often, sclerotherapy treated veins fade within a few weeks, though occasionally more than one treatment may be required. No bed rest is required following the sclerotherapy procedure.
This highly specialized procedure works much like the sclerotherapy mentioned above except that it is used to treat larger varicose veins that are hidden beneath the skin’s surface. Prior to the procedure, a detailed ultrasound examination helps create a sort of map displaying all the abnormal veins. Using the ultrasound as a guide, the doctor then finds the varicose veins and injects the solution into them. The recovery time is very brief.
The phlebectomy procedure uses a series of incisions in the skin next to the enlarged varicose vein. The doctor then inserts a phlebectomy hook under the surface of the skin to remove the varicose vein through the tiny incision. This procedure is done with local anesthesia and usually takes between 30 and 60 minutes. No stitches are required, and most patients can resume daily activities within 24 hours.
