Here’s how varicose veins are formed:
Your heart pumps blood through your arteries, delivering nutrients and oxygen to your organs via capillaries. The deoxygenated blood is then pumped through your veins back up to the heart and through the lungs, where the oxygen supply is replenished.
On the way up to the heart, the blood has to travel against gravity, and with less momentum than when it left the heart through the arteries. In order to keep the blood from flowing backward, healthy veins have thousands of one-way valves. When these valves weaken or stop working, the blood pools and the veins bulge beneath the skin.
