Your cardiovascular system is a wonderfully complex system consisting of your heart, a network of blood vessels, and approximately 5 Liters of blood.
It’s responsible for transporting oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and cellular waste products throughout the body. The cardiovascular system is powered by your heart, your body’s hardest working organ.
Your heart works hard every day to pump that blood through your body. It does its job beautifully in part because of the support it receives from the rest of your cardiovascular system. Your arteries, capillaries, and veins all play a huge role in getting your body the oxygen and nutrients it needs. Have you ever heard the saying, “There are no small parts, only small actors”? The cardiovascular system is kind of like that. Every part of the cardiovascular system is important.
At San Diego Varicose Vein Treatment Center, we’re heart people who specialize in diagnosing and treating vein and vascular diseases. Led by Cardiologist Dr. Behzad Taghizadeh, we spend every day looking at and thinking about veins and their relationship to the rest of the cardiovascular system.
Varicose veins are not just a cosmetic issue.
In our work, one of the things we run into a lot is the belief that varicose veins are merely a cosmetic issue. But it’s just not true. Even if a varicose vein does not point directly to an immediate problem, we still see it as something to look into. Our veins do important work in our bodies, and it’s vital that they’re in good shape. Having your varicose veins checked out and treated is crucial to maintaining good heart health. Still not convinced? Let’s talk about the composition of varicose veins.
Here’s how varicose veins are formed:
Your heart pumps blood through your arteries, delivering nutrients and oxygen to your organs via capillaries. The deoxygenated blood is then pumped through your veins back up to the heart and through the lungs, where the oxygen supply is replenished.
On the way up to the heart, the blood has to travel against gravity, and with less momentum than when it left the heart through the arteries. In order to keep the blood from flowing backward, healthy veins have thousands of one-way valves. When these valves weaken or stop working, the blood pools and the veins bulge beneath the skin.
