Men’s Health Month Tackles Varicose Veins

June is not only the month Father’s day falls under but also Men’s Health Month. An entire month that is dedicated to the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of preventable health issues. The goal of Men’s Health Month is to heighten the awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys. Encouraging the youth, adult, and elderly of today to seek regular medical advice and early treatment for not only disease but also injury.

Although varicose veins are up to three times more common in women than men, they still affect many of the male population all over the world. In fact, over 40 million people in the United States are affected by varicose veins regardless of their sex. Luckily, there are many ways to help prevent and treat this common condition – in men and women alike.

Tip #1 – Get Exercising

Being sedentary is not only bad for your veins but can also lead to many other health problems. It is important for both your vein health and overall health to add some form of daily activity to your health regimen. A 30-minute walk or leisurely swim are a couple of great workouts to try. Tip #2 – Improve Your Circulation

Work toward improving the health of your entire circulatory system. Simple stretches after long periods of sitting or standing and good postural habits such as not crossing your legs when sitting can help support better vein function and improve circulation. Also, it is important to quit smoking and using other harmful tobacco products, all of which can cause harm to one’s health.

Tip #3 – Eat and Drink Healthy

What you eat or drink has lasting effects on the human body. Keep hydrated and choose water instead of sugar-filled drinks. Also, it is important to keep an eye on your sodium intake and try to steer clear of salty food. Eat more fruits and vegetables high in fiber, vitamin C and rutin such as berries and asparagus, which are great for vein, circulatory and overall health.

Tip #4 – Get Treatment

In some cases, varicose veins can be a sign of other more threatening health issues and it is important to let your medical provider know. Talk to your doctor or a medical professional about treatments to consider.
